#WomenWillWin Features – Mikhaela Donnelly
Basketball should be known as everyone’s game, but sadly some of the impressive stories of women players aren’t as well known as they should be. Basketball Queensland is aiming to change that by running a campaign — #WomenWillWin — designed to educate the public on amazing female players.
This week’s focus is on 24-year-old Mikhaela Donnelly, a WNBL player from Sunnybank, Brisbane. Mikhaela started her career at the Australian Institute of Sport in 2010, age 16, and has loved the sport since far earlier.
“Basketball has given me something to be passionate about, something to look forward to after a long day,” she said. “Basketball is high on the list of things that always puts me in a good mood, and representing my country at any level has always been one of my greatest accomplishments. It allowed me to travel the world and there is nothing better than developing your game against international calibre players on the same mission as you.”
“Playing in the WNBL has given me the opportunity to develop alongside some of the best players Australia has ever seen, such as Kristen Veal and Suzy Batkovic. Playing at a level where basketball is a job, most of the time a full-time job is extremely different to playing for fun no matter the skillsets. It allows us to develop our bodies, our minds, and our skills without being distracted by other parts of life like work.”
Mikhaela is keeping for options for the next stage in her career flexible, cheerfully announcing that she’s “just taking it as it comes at the moment”. Her excitement is linked to her young daughter Adisyn, who only recently celebrated her second birthday. “Basketball has given my daughter quite the introduction to life. I came back after giving birth and won a WNBL Championship with her by my side to experience it all — she had two WNBL seasons under her belt before she actually turned two.”
Basketball has done a lot for Mikhaela, and she’s grateful for every blessing. “This world introduced me to my husband-to-be and has given me friendships that will last a lifetime.” And, as she frequently mentions, her daughter, another young girl certain to grow up around the courts.
Basketball Queensland’s #WomenWillWin campaign is designed around empowering girls by sharing stories. If there is a woman in your life who you think should feature in this campaign, please contact us. Our goal is to empower all women who desire to play because it’s ‘everyone’s game’.
