We also welcome Karling Fernandini, who will be with the BQ team as Operations Manager for the next 6 months.
We managed to grab Kalin for a quick chat this week to find out what makes her tick and see what how she feel about her new role at Basketball Queensland.
What did you do before coming to BQ?
I’ve worked in the sporting industry all my life, starting off in local government as a Sport and Recreation Officer, before moving to South Australia where I worked for Basketball SA as a Stadium Manager, and then as their Development Manager.
Did you / do you play any sports and to what level?
My main sport is hockey. I started as a junior in Ipswich playing through to senior A grade and rep. I dual signed and played in Brisbane Div 1 for a couple of years before moving to Adelaide and playing premier league. I also played Vigoro for Ipswich and QLD and have enjoyed dabbling in basketball, triathlon, swimming, touch football and even rugby league (when I was younger).
Who inspires you and why?
One of my many sporting heroes is Ellyse Perry, an Australian Cricketer and Footballer. I admire her ability to be able to perform successfully at such a high level for multiple sports. My other heroes are my parents. They have instilled in me my work ethic and love of seeing people involved in the community – they continue to inspire me with their dedication and commitment to the things they love (mostly sport) and how they continue to challenge themselves.
What do you hope to achieve in your new role?
I have a strong passion for seeing people involved in sport. Whether it be through improved processes which ease the burden on volunteers, creative new ideas or improving relationships, I want to support all Queensland clubs and associations to improve and deliver the best opportunities to play basketball they can.
