Improve Your Shooting Accuracy and Range
Basketball is no longer a sport reserved for the tall. Over the past decade, the three-point shot has become more and more important in basketball. Here are a couple of techniques you can include in your workout and basketball training to improve your accuracy and range.
Shooting Form
When training to shoot from long range, it is very important that you’re aware of your shooting form. Your shooting form should not change when shooting three-pointers, what should change is your strength and your shot mechanics.
Strength
Weight training programs for basketball players are an excellent way to increase strength for shooting distance. Focusing on your legs, wrist, forearms, triceps and core will directly affect your shooting.
Using a heavier than regulation ball while training is also a good way to condition your body. Players usually find a noticeable difference when switching back from a heavy to a regulation ball.
Simply practicing your shooting will also increase muscles in your arms and wrists.
Shot Mechanics
The most effective way to improve your 3 point scoring is training and time. The more you spend on your shooting the better you’ll get.
Start off by shooting about 12’ from the hoop until you are comfortable, this could take hundreds of shots. Once comfortable, move back as far until you feel your shooting rhythm has changed and then adjust to shooting from that position. When you get comfortable shooting from the 3 point line, refine your shooting with drills.
Focus on the consistency of your shooting. It doesn’t matter if you’re missing to start off with, if your form is consistent it’s easy to make small adjustments to improve your accuracy.
