2020 Future Development Program
Basketball Queensland (BQ) is excited to announce the resumption of the Future Development Program (FDP) in 2020.
The FDP is the entry level program into BQ’s three tier Performance Program, aimed at identifying and preparing young athletes aged 12-13 and as well as emerging coaches for elite basketball.
Selected athletes will be invited to attend 12 weekly advanced training sessions where they will work on their skills, training habits, shooting and team concepts and game components underpinning the BQ Style of Play and athlete development.
Training will be held at home centres nominated by Associations for athletes in Central and North Queensland and at The Sleeman Centre for athletes in South East Queensland.
The 2020 nomination process and selection of FDP athletes is slightly different this year due to the impact of COVID restrictions, as players would usually be assessed by a selection panel attending regional competitions (BQJBC, CQJBC and QNJBC), before being selected for the program.
This year our Associations have been asked to nominate emerging athletes from their programs who meet specific FDP selection criteria.
Our BQ High Performance department have now finalised FDP athlete selection for 2020 based on Association nominations, player selection criteria and game statistics (where possible), with invitations to join the program being sent from Monday, 20 July.
Athletes and their parents or guardians will have one week to formally accept their FDP offer before the program starts in August.
The program is structured to prepare athletes for future high performance programs, including our State Performance Program (SPP), with many FDP athletes going on to represent both Queensland and Australia.
