The Easter school holidays saw the running of the 2016 State Championships for Under 12, 14 and 16 with each age group attracting record numbers.
First we travelled north for the Under 16’s, the boys in Mackay and the girls in Townsville. The boys gold medal game was fought out between Cairns and Southern Districts, both teams containing several players from last year’s U14 final, and again it was Cairns who would reign supreme 75-68. Further up in Townsville the home side made it through to the girls’ decider taking on hot favourites South West Metro. A packed house created a phenomenal atmosphere for the final, and while the large Townsville contingent did their best to boost their team, the Pirates proved too strong to come away deserved champions 70-56. Congratulations also go to our U16 Division 2 winners Brisbane Capitals Silver (boys) and Sunshine Coast Phoenix (girls), and Division 3 winners Burdekin Wildcats (boys) and Bundaberg Bears (girls).
Next up was the Under 12’s which was hosted in Logan. The boys’ decider saw the undefeated Brisbane Capitals take on giant-killers Rockhampton. A tense game in which Rocky led by 2 at the three-quarter, the Capitals found an extra gear when it mattered most to run away winners 64-55. The girls’ final saw home-town favourites Logan tackle a red-hot Townsville, and leading from start to finish, it was the Flames who proved too good for their hosts to come away champions 45-38. Well done also to our Division 2 winners Ipswich Force (boys) and Northside Wizards (girls).
Lastly we moved onto the Under 14’s, with Brisbane hosting the boys and Ipswich the girls. In a replay of last years’ boys final Southern Districts took on Cairns who were looking to go back to back. The Spartans however would gain revenge and proved too strong against valiant Marlins 62-43. Over at the girls again saw Townsville make a decider, this time taking on Gold Coast. It would turn out to be another title for the ‘ville, a rampant first half setting up a comfortable 56-41 victory. We also acknowledge our winners in Division 2 Southern Districts Titans (boys) and Townsville Lightning (girls), and Division 3 winners Gold Coast Breakers ((boys) and Mackay Comets (girls).
A huge congratulations goes to Cairns Basketball who have claimed the 2016 Vince Hickey Award for the overall champion association at these State Championships. It is the first time Cairns have claimed the shield since its inception in 1990, edging out northern rivals Townsville by just the solitary point!
We thank all associations for their involvement in what was yet another huge and exciting two weeks of State Championships basketball, we look forward to doing it all again next year!
